(smiley) I'm glad the machine took over
A love letter by Woodpecker Freddie.
Not knowing how to read sheet music or how to play a musical instrument, “I’m glad the machine took over” is a research project in written and generated music. By adding contact microphones to an old 1962 Erika 12 typewriter I turned it into an instrument to simultaneously write the music score and play the piece.
The composition of the text on the paper, the movement of the machine and the rhythm of the keys being played interact to create an emergent soundscape, my first piece of written music.
The music is displayed on an old desk, in the family since 1982, and played on an 2002 eMac scavenged from an art academy dumpster. 1962, 1982, 2002, 2022.
